Tripindi Shradh in Varanasi: Who Needs It, Full Vidhi, Samagri and Cost (Pitru Paksha 2026)

Last updated: 21 September 2026 β€” reviewed by our Kashi teerth purohits.

Quick answer

Tripindi Shradh is a remedial rite performed for ancestors of three generations whose Shradh was never done, was discontinued for three or more years, or who died an unnatural or untimely death and are believed to remain in Preta Yoni. In Varanasi it is performed at Pishach Mochan Kund β€” the tirth named in Kashi Khand Chapter 54 for exactly this liberation. Pitru Paksha 2026 runs 26 September to 10 October, and Amavasya or any Chaturdashi is the preferred day. Our Tripindi Shradh begins at β‚Ή25,000, including complete samagri, brahmin bhojan and dakshina for the Vedic brahmins.

Most families who come to us for Tripindi Shradh arrive after years of something not adding up. A marriage that never quite settles. A business that collapses despite sincere effort and no obvious cause. A pregnancy that won’t hold, with no medical explanation offered. Somewhere in that period an astrologer looked at the kundali, found Pitru Dosh, and said the word Tripindi.

This article explains what the rite actually is, who genuinely needs it and who doesn’t, what happens across the three to four hours, what it costs and why, and why Kashi β€” specifically Pishach Mochan β€” is the place scripture points to.

What Is Tripindi Shradh? (Tripindi Shradh Kya Hota Hai)

β€œTri” means three and β€œPindi” refers to the pind, the offering of rice, barley flour, sesame and ghee. Tripindi Shradh is the offering of three pinds representing three ancestral lines β€” pita, pitamah and prapitamah β€” across both the paternal and maternal side.

It is not the same thing as the annual Shradh performed on an ancestor’s tithi. That is a nitya, a regular observance. Tripindi is a parihara β€” a corrective rite, performed when something in the normal cycle has broken down. The Atharva Veda formulation is that we satisfy the ancestors of three generations; Tripindi is what’s done when that satisfaction has not happened for a long time.

When Tripindi Shradh is prescribed

  • Regular Shradh has not been performed for three or more consecutive years
  • Last rites were incomplete, or were never performed at all
  • An ancestor within three generations died an unnatural or untimely death β€” accident, drowning, fire, snakebite, epidemic, suicide
  • An ancestor died young, or with strong unfulfilled desires
  • A jyotishi has identified Pitru Dosh in the birth chart
  • Repeated obstacles across marriage, childbirth, health, property or livelihood that resist ordinary explanation

The tradition treats these as a class: ancestors who, for one of these reasons, are understood not to have moved on from Preta Yoni into Pitru Loka, and whose unsettled state is felt by the living. If you are unsure whether this applies to your family, a chart reading answers it before any booking is made β€” that’s what our Vedic astrology consultation is for.

You don’t have to wait for a parent to die

A point families are often surprised by: if the birth chart indicates Pitru Dosh, Tripindi Shradh can be performed while your parents are still living. The rite addresses the ancestral line, not a recent bereavement. There is no requirement to wait.

Equally, any living son may perform it β€” married or unmarried. A married couple performing it together is considered especially complete. A widower may perform it. These questions come up constantly and the answers are less restrictive than most families assume.

Why Pishach Mochan in Varanasi

Tripindi Shradh is performed at several tirthas β€” Trimbakeshwar, Gaya, Gokarna, Rameshwaram, Udupi. Kashi belongs on that list and is usually left off it, which is worth correcting.

Kashi Khand, Chapter 54, records the origin of the kund now known as Pishach Mochan. It was originally Vimal Tirth, a water body created by the Shiva gana Kapardi, who worshipped Shiva there β€” which is how Kapardishwar Mahadev came to be. An ascetic named Valmiki was in penance on its bank when a Pishach appeared before him: a brahmin who had fallen into Pishach Yoni through the karma of a past birth, and who begged for release. Valmiki told him to bathe in the kund and worship Kapardishwar. He was liberated, and the tirth has carried the name Pishach Mochan ever since.

The relevance is direct rather than decorative. Tripindi Shradh exists to release ancestors held in Preta or Pishach Yoni. Pishach Mochan is the tirth whose founding account is precisely that release. Along with Gaya, it has been a recognised site for Pind Daan and Tripindi Shradh for centuries.

The kund sits in the Pishach Mochan locality near Chetganj, with the Kapardishwar temple alongside. Families performing the rite here also commonly complete Pind Daan on the Ganga ghats and take darshan at Kaal Bhairav, the Kotwal of Kashi, whose role in the Pishach Mochan account is itself part of the local tradition.

Tripindi Shradh Vidhi: What Happens on the Day

The full rite runs three to four hours. The sequence below is the Kashi paddhati our purohits follow; other tirthas vary in detail, not in substance.

  1. Snan and achaman. Ritual bath β€” at the kund, or at the Ganga where the family prefers. The yajaman observes a fast until the rite is completed.
  2. The purohit states the date, place, your name and gotra, and the names of the ancestors being addressed, along with the specific reason the rite is being performed.
  3. Kalash and panchang sthapana. Installation of the kalash and invocation of the presiding deities, establishing the ground for the rite.
  4. Invocation of the three lines. Ancestors of three generations are named and invoked β€” paternal and maternal both, which is the part regular Shradh often leaves incomplete.
  5. Preparation and offering of the three pinds. Rice, barley flour, sesame and ghee, formed and offered to the three lines. This is the core act the rite is named for.
  6. Water offered with til and kusha, accompanied by the prescribed mantras.
  7. Havan and shanti vidhi. Fire offering and the shanti sequence that closes the corrective portion of the rite.
  8. Brahman bhojan and dakshina. Feeding of the Vedic brahmins and the offering of dakshina. This is not an optional courtesy appended to the end β€” in Shradh karma the brahman bhojan is understood as the vehicle by which the offering reaches the ancestors, and a Tripindi performed without it is incomplete.
  9. Daan and visarjan. Charity appropriate to the rite, and immersion of the offerings.

Quotes for this rite vary enormously between tirthas and operators, and the variation is rarely explained. Here is ours, and what sits inside it.

Our Tripindi Shradh: from β‚Ή25,000

Complete samagri as listed above β€” nothing for you to source separately

Brahman bhojan for the officiating Vedic brahmins

Dakshina for the Vedic brahmins, included in the figure and not asked for again on the day

Full Kashi paddhati vidhi at Pishach Mochan, three to four hours

Coordination of the kund and temple arrangements

Two things that figure is designed to prevent. The first is the sourcing problem β€” families arriving the morning of the rite to discover they were expected to buy samagri themselves, in an unfamiliar market, against a muhurat clock. The second is the dakshina surprise, where a quoted price turns out to cover the purohit’s time and nothing else, and the brahman bhojan and dakshina are raised as separate figures once the rite is underway and the family is in no position to negotiate.

Whoever you book with β€” us or anyone else β€” ask for those three items in writing before you pay: samagri, brahman bhojan, dakshina. A quote that won’t name them is a quote that intends to revisit them. Our guide to choosing a trusted Vedic jyotish and purohit in Varanasi covers what else to verify.

When to Perform It: Tripindi Shradh Kab Karna Chahiye

Tripindi Shradh can be performed on any day of the year when a jyotishi has prescribed it urgently. But certain days are markedly preferred, and Pitru Paksha is the strongest window of all.

  • Pitru Paksha β€” 26 September to 10 October 2026. The fortnight in which the ancestors are held to visit, and the most auspicious period for any Shradh karma.
  • Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Mahalaya Amavasya) β€” 10 October 2026. The single most significant day, and the right choice when the ancestor’s tithi is unknown.
  • Ghata Chaturdashi β€” 9 October 2026. Traditionally the tithi for those who died by weapon, snakebite, accident or other unnatural cause, which overlaps closely with the Tripindi indication.
  • Any Amavasya or Chaturdashi through the year, when Pitru Paksha has passed and the matter is pressing.

The tradition also holds that Tripindi performed once in twelve years clears Pitru Rin more completely than isolated observance. That is worth knowing before anyone tells you it must be repeated annually.

What This Rite Does and Does Not Do

Worth stating plainly, because this is a distressed audience and the selling around it can be ugly.

Tripindi Shradh is a prescribed, scripturally grounded response to a specific condition: ancestral rites left incomplete. Performed properly, with the pinds offered, the tarpan made and the brahmans fed, it discharges an obligation the tradition takes seriously. That is what it does.

What it does not do is guarantee an outcome on a timetable. Anyone telling you that a marriage will be fixed, a pregnancy will hold or a business will recover within a stated period after the rite is making a promise the tradition itself does not make. And anyone escalating from β‚Ή25,000 to a much larger figure on the grounds that your dosh is unusually severe is selling, not advising β€” Tripindi is a defined rite, not a tiered product.

We will also tell you when the chart doesn’t indicate it. That conversation costs us bookings during Pitru Paksha, which is precisely why it’s worth having.

Booking Tripindi Shradh in Varanasi

Send us your ancestors’ details and, where known, the circumstances β€” whether the rites were done, whether any death was untimely, and what a jyotishi has told you. We’ll confirm whether Tripindi is the right rite, fix the tithi inside the Pitru Paksha window, and arrange the Pishach Mochan and brahman arrangements. Start at online pandit booking.

Travelling in for it? Pitru Paksha is Varanasi’s busiest ritual fortnight, and purohit and lodging availability tightens sharply in the final week before Amavasya. Accommodation coordination is arranged alongside the booking. Families outside the city can also see pandit booking across Varanasi districts.

If you can’t travel, the rite can be performed at the tirth in your name with the sankalp made on your behalf β€” long-standing practice, not a modern accommodation. Insist on video of the full rite, the acharyas’ names, and prasad dispatched afterwards. Tell us your situation and we’ll be straight with you about which option fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tripindi Shradh kya hota hai?

It is the offering of three pinds to ancestors of three generations β€” pita, pitamah and prapitamah β€” on both the paternal and maternal side. It is a corrective rite, performed when regular Shradh was never done or was discontinued, or when an ancestor died an unnatural or untimely death.

Who needs to perform Tripindi Shradh?

Families where Shradh has lapsed for three or more years, where last rites were incomplete, where an ancestor within three generations died young or unnaturally, or where a jyotishi has found Pitru Dosh in the chart.

Tripindi Shradh kaha hota hai?

Principally at Kashi (Pishach Mochan), Gaya, Trimbakeshwar, Gokarna, Rameshwaram and Udupi. Pishach Mochan Kund in Varanasi is named in Kashi Khand Chapter 54 as the tirth of liberation from Pishach Yoni, which is the condition the rite addresses.

What does Tripindi Shradh cost?

Ours begins at β‚Ή25,000, including complete samagri, brahman bhojan and dakshina for the Vedic brahmins. Quotes elsewhere vary widely β€” ask specifically whether those three items are inside the figure.

How long does it take?

Three to four hours for the full vidhi, occasionally longer depending on the paddhati and the number of ancestors named.

Can it be done while my parents are alive?

Yes. If the chart indicates Pitru Dosh, there is no requirement to wait for a parent’s death. The rite addresses the ancestral line.

Who can perform it?

Any living son, married or unmarried. A married couple performing together is considered especially complete, and a widower may perform it.

Does it have to be repeated every year?

No. The tradition holds that performing it once in twelve years clears Pitru Rin. Insistence on annual repetition is a sales technique, not a requirement.

When should it be done in 2026?

Within Pitru Paksha, 26 September to 10 October. Sarva Pitru Amavasya on 10 October is the strongest day; Ghata Chaturdashi on 9 October suits ancestors who died unnaturally.

Is Tripindi Shradh the same as Pind Daan?

Related but not identical. Pind Daan is the offering of pind generally; Tripindi is the specific three-line corrective form performed when the ancestral rites have broken down.
